MikroTik setup for a small office: a 10-step checklist

MikroTik routers are popular in Armenian offices because they are powerful and affordable. But a router left with default settings is slow, unstable and an easy target. Here is the checklist our engineers use.

Published:

1–3. Protect the router first

  • Update RouterOS and the RouterBOARD firmware to the latest stable version.
  • Replace the default admin user with a personal account and a strong password, and turn off services you do not use.
  • Allow management only from the office network or over VPN, never from the whole internet.

4–6. Firewall and network segments

  • Keep a simple firewall: allow established connections and management from trusted addresses, block everything else coming to the router.
  • Create separate VLANs for staff, guests, printers and other devices. Guests should reach only the internet.
  • Enable FastTrack for normal traffic so the router stays fast under load.

7–8. Remote access and Wi-Fi

  • Use WireGuard VPN for employees working from home and for connecting branch offices.
  • If you use MikroTik access points, manage them centrally (CAPsMAN or the newer wifi package) so all of them share one configuration.

9–10. Backups and monitoring

  • Schedule an automatic export of the configuration and store it off the router.
  • Send logs to a remote server and monitor CPU, traffic and interface errors, so problems are visible before users complain.
